While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, noticed cracking sounds ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her apartment, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up from behind. It was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He moved at something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to dozens of victims.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s account was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the violence becoming a makeshift hospital. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the surf to assist people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, comments of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always conquer hatred”.

The group of beach patrol issued a communication, explaining they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are touched by the care for our team,” the team commented. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those affected.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many full-time lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the second the shooting commenced until late that night.

“We have heard so many moving stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a council representative.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in ensuring our world-famous beaches safe for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and come to terms with the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
