A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
